On soil that active, the difference between a scope that will hold and one that will not is larger than average — which is the case for an independent read when two proposals disagree.
What an engineer is actually for
An independent structural engineer is paid to reach a conclusion and has no stake in the repair that follows. That is the whole product. A contractor can measure, photograph and explain — and should — but a contractor cannot be the neutral party on their own quote, and no amount of good faith changes that.
So the fee earns its keep when a question needs settling by someone with nothing to sell: when two companies have looked at the same wall and told you different stories, when a sale or a dispute needs a document, or when the scope being proposed is large enough that a second opinion costs less than being wrong.
When you do not need one
Most repairs proceed perfectly well on a measured evaluation.
